The reason for Christmas

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

– Isaiah 9:6

It is the most wonderful time of year as Andy Williams puts it in his Christmas song, and while many people associate this wonderful time of year with traditions such as mistletoe , toasting marshmallows , and decorating Christmas trees , there is however, a much deeper and more significant reason behind the festivities and the usual Christmas traditions. All those festivities can sometimes cause us to lose sight of why we are celebrating Christmas to begin with: the birth of Jesus Christ!

Jesus is the reason for the season because he brings hope to both bleak and bustling lives, for those of us in the darkness and those who have simply forgotten to slow down and enjoy the presence of God’s greatest gift once a year. This Reason has been specially made for Mankind’s salvation, regardless of their social status, education, race or religion. Because, he is come to reconcile all to himself. Luke 19:10.

The nativity tells us of this story of a humble birth born in a manger after traveling a great distance to fleeing from Herod’s jealousy which does not sound like a story reflecting the birth of the promised one worthy of the names in Isaiah 9:6. However, it serves as a reminder that the world we live in is not perfect. Yet despite the darkness, there is always a light that will break through and bring happiness, joy, and peace to overcome sorrows, misery, and pain. This light is the light that brings salvation to all men, the brightest star that will lead us through life to him like the magis’ journey and the gateway to heaven with welcoming angels proclaiming the good news that God is interested in all men like the shepherds’ testimony.

As we continue to enjoy the joy of the season, let us also keep in mind the beauty of the reason for the season of God’s gift for us to walk closer to him ,to preach glad tidings to all men, share gifts of love, spreading joy and goodwill because in this season and always, God is with us.

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”

Matthew 1:23
